So I've been seriously disappointed with my sidekick 3, after being more than satisfied with my SK1 for a few years. Ever since I've had the Sidekick 3, it's had continuous audio problems, both on my end and for the callee, and I've gone back and forth with tmobile customer support over it. There's echos, buzzes, pops, and all sort of noise that make conversation really hard. It's like talking to someone in a noisy subway car or something.

So I call again today, this time essentially stating that I've had it with this unit, I've seen many complaints on the web about similar issues, and I want a replacement. Other folks who have had similar problems have had them resolved when the phone is replaced, so I would like to go that route.

And I'm told that Danger is finally acknowledging that there is an issue, and they are looking for a software solution. In the interim, they will NOT accept phone returns for the echo problem.

So I explain how it's not just the echo that the other party hears, but really crappy sound on my end. pops, buzzes, just really bad audio. So he puts me on hold to "research", and a few minutes comes back on and authorizes a return. But there's a catch.

Because I did not purchase a $5.99 "insurance plan" with tmobile within 14 days of buying the phone, they cannot authorize an exchange unless they receive the phone first. So essentially they expect their customers who have defective phones to go without phone for a week or however long it takes for the exchange to occur. There's no sane reason for this, except to discourage returns of defective products.

I had problems with my SK1, and they sent me a phone for the exchange beforehand. It was an easy process, and kept me satisfied with tmobile. Now that's changed. Tmobile seems to have forgotten the value of customer goodwill.

I would discourace anyone from purchasing a sidekick until danger & tmobile their their technology and their customer service issues sorted out. If you get a defective phone, and there's a reasonable chance you will, then they will try to screw you out of replacing it.

Not acceptable.

Well, I'm moderating the tribe, and keeping it updated with the latest on the new custom SK2's (Juicy Couture and Mr. Cartoon), skin kits, charms and other accessories. I'm also going to be posting a tip a day for the new OTA Release 2.3, which I just got yesterday.

Start-up company Danger is ready to take the wraps off a prototype of new all-in-one device it is developing to run its wireless software and services.

The prototype of the next-generation Hiptop device will be demonstrated to potential carrier customers this week at the 3GSM World Congress 2004 in Cannes, France, representatives for Danger said on Monday. New features in the color-display device, which will be smaller than current models, include an integrated camera, a speakerphone and application-launch buttons.

Hiptop is Danger's reference design for a combination cell phone and Web-browsing handheld device.

The added features planned for the device build off trends in the handset market, such as the popularity of integrated cameras, which helped phone makers to ship a record number of units in 2003.

The focus of the development of the new Hiptop device is to make its features more accessible, the company said. New services will also be added. It will have roughly the same front size as current models but will be about 25 percent thinner, Danger said.

The new model is set for release later this year, according to Danger, which would not comment on a more exact availability date or on pricing.

By previewing the device, Danger runs the risk of slowing down sales in the United States, as consumers may choose to wait to purchase the new model. However, the new model has only reached the prototype stage and has not yet been approved by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission.

So here's my dilemma. My poor hiptop which I've had since they first came out in October 2002 is on its last legs. I've called T-Mobile to ask if I can get another one at a discount if I renew my contract with them (which expired last year). They say no...I have to pay full price $250 or ($200 if I order online). The thing is, the Treo 600 (which can do just about anything the hiptop can, as well as sync to Outlook and run thousands of Palm OS applications including an mp3 player) is about the same price if I switch to Verizon (and I won't have to give up my phone number!)

I'd hate to give up my Hiptop but T-Mobile isn't giving me any incentive to stay. Do you guys know of a reason why I shouldn't switch now that the price difference is negligible? Anyone know of how I might be able to get a new Hiptop at a discount? Thanks!

I think that rather than having the hiptop.com forums 'linked' (but buried two levels down under an easily-missed 'Community' link on the page), this page should become much more of a community-oriented page, with for example a frame containing the 5 most recent posts from hiptop.com/forums/, hipalbum.com, and other sites. I would also like to see some more help for non-technically-savvy users to get things like mail forwarding to their @tmail.com account up and running, etc.

Myself, being the geekiest little geek that ever geeked, didn't have any trouble figuring out these sorts of things, but I feel like T-Mobile could be doing a *lot* more on that web page to make the possibilities and existing uses of the hiptop evident to people who *don't* already know, e.g., how to write a .procmail recipe or use an SSH session.

I would love to know what the rest of you all think of this, independent of course of the likelihood of T-Mobile actually *implementing* such a thing. :p

Ok, her's a serious power-user feature for y'all. Did you know that you could address mail directly to a folder in your hiptop mail? Well, you can!

Let's say that I've created a bunch of folders for the various mailing lists that I'm on (Fire, Tattoos, Events, etc.)

If I want something sent directly into one of those folders have it addressed to FolderName#yourname@tmail.com.

For example, to send something to Fire I would address it to:

Fire#name@tmail.com

I don't use the built-in email address that comes with my hiptop account. I prefer to use my account on my vanity domain. I have a series of procmail scripts running there processing all of my mail, performing spam filtering, and then sorting it all out into various folders and sending it directly to those folders on my hiptop.

Works great.

First I have to say my sidekick is like electronic crack. It's always in my pocket, unlike my previous cell phones which I'd always seem to forget to bring with, or plug in and charge.

That said, I was wondering what ideas people had to beef up the UI to make it a little more useable?

My biggest beef is that a friend calls me from a new number and there is no easy way to add that new number from caller id into my phonebook. Since I'm on medications that effect my short term memory, I have to flip back and forth to get the number in there, pain the ass.

I know everyone is griping about javascript missing from the browser, and since the thing is java based, have the developers looked at using Rhino, the java implementation of javascript? Maybe it's too big a library for the device, I don't know.

Also, url's in AIM messages ... not sure how you'd swing that, but man that'd be awesome.

Finally, when is this OTA coming and are there any rumours on what it's going to do?

Otherwise, I love the thing to death. I just wish it was on a different network then T-Immobile.

since i've had this for a while, and it's been fairly well used, it might just be wear and tear.
